When thousands of Chinese landed in South Australia it was a marathon walk, originally from Adelaide, then from Victor Harbour and finally from Robe. This was to avoid paying a capitation tax of ten pounds. The provisions of a Victorian Act of 1855 sought to dramatically limit Chinese immigration by restricting the number of crew and passengers on each ship bringing Chinese into Victoria. Tim Burstall is known as the celebrated director of Stork, Alvin Purple and other 'ocker' comedies.
