Jan Bassett was a prominent Australian historian and academic as well as being a published author. She was an Associate professor of History at the University of Melbourne. She completed 'The Facing Island' before she died in 1999 from breast cancer, at the age of 46. She was unable to see her imaginative memoir through to publication.
