• When thousands of Chinese landed in South Australia it was a marathon walk, originally from Adelaide, then from Victor Harbour and finally from Robe. This was to avoid paying a capitation tax of ten pounds. The provisions of a Victorian Act of 1855 sought to dramatically limit Chinese immigration by restricting the number of crew and passengers on each ship bringing Chinese into Victoria. This 183-page softcover/paperback book is in good condition. Note some creases on rear cover. Nothing bad but mentioned for accuracy. Written in the pioneers' own words it provides a unique record from the 1880s onwards in the way that men and women, thought, spoke and acted during the golden era. Please check all photos provided. For its age the book is in good condition throughout.
