  • When thousands of Chinese landed in South Australia it was a marathon walk, originally from Adelaide, then from Victor Harbour and finally from Robe. This was to avoid paying a capitation tax of ten pounds. The provisions of a Victorian Act of 1855 sought to dramatically limit Chinese immigration by restricting the number of crew and passengers on each ship bringing Chinese into Victoria.
