In 1906 at Sorrell in Tasmania, Melbourne born Howard Vernon (singer and comedian) married an actress and singer, Lavinia Florence De Loitte (1881-1962). Vinia, as she was known on stage, was the toast of Sydney in 1904 as Fifi in The Belle of New York. This book gives an account by Vinia de Loitte (Mrs. Howard Vernon) of the stories of the operas and of their production and revivals in Australia. The printer is Whitmarks Ltd. of 102 Sussex Street Sydney. This book has been signed by Vinia and inscribed as " I take after my mother (Mikado)." This is the 296 page, 1975 hardback first edition with dustjacket written by Brett Freeman. It provides a detailed account of the activities at Lake Boga during World War 2. The renowned Eastern Arrernte painter, Kathleen Kemarre Wallace tells stories of her elders and their way of life that she learnt as a child and young woman. Her knowledge of country, law and culture are evident in her words and paintings. Her story -telling illuminates the origins and beliefs of Eastern Arrernte people and calls for respect for the ancient traditions of the altyerre spirits. If you are wanting one with loads of character that has been well used and added to with snippets cut from elsewhere and glued in, look no further. It is small, measuring approximately 13 cm x 18 cm. The lower section of page 199 has been cut out. The advertisements are interesting too. -
This very special First Edition book was written by Walter Emanuel (also author of 'A Dog Day') and published by Lawrence & Bullen 16 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London in 1904. It contains 36 printed pages of text with 18, plus the title page vignette, splendid full-page colour illustrations throughout. The illustrator is Cecil Aldin. On the top ACC is imprinted which shows it originated from a city council somewhere beginning with the letter A. The lamp inside is intact and originally would have been filled with kerosene. She has an impressive portfolio of selected collections and commissions and has an impressive history of exhibitions. Shona has studios in Italy and France.
