Olegas Truchanas, a Lithuanian born Tasmanian was a master photographer and a champion of the Tasmanian wilderness. He was also a councillor of the Australian Conservation Foundation. He sadly lost his life in the Gordon River Gorge on January 6th, 1972. This book of 144 pages, including both colour and black and white plates, has gathered together his finest works. Dennis O'Hoy worked in education from 1959 until his retirement in 1996. He was head of the School of Art and Design at the La Trobe University Bendigo campus. In 2016 he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia Award for significant service to the community of Bendigo, particularly through heritage preservation organisations and his commitment to tertiary education. This hardback book of 376 pages is heavy ((1364 gr) and contains both colour and black & white photographs as well as black & white diagrams. It was edited by Mike Butcher and published in 2015. In 1861 the founding citizens of Bendigo saw the upcoming 1862 London International Exhibition as an opportunity to showcase Bendigo 'so that a proper idea may more readily be formed at home of the importance of this great mining portion of Victoria.' The series of views included in this book was commissioned by the Sandhurst Town Council for this Exhibition. The photographs were taken by Augustus Baker Peirce for his employer Benjamin Pierce Batchelder. Gus Peirce was told to photograph 'all the places of interest' so there are photos of where the people of Bendigo worked, banked, shopped, recreated, worshipped, drank, were punished, healed or buried. Thomas Eyres was born in Ballarat in 1870 and found his way to the Western Australian goldfields in 1894. After travelling by steamer and train he and a mate walked the last 180 miles to Coolgardie. Lloyd Frederic Rees (1895-1988) was an Australian landscape painter who twice won the Wynne Prize for his landscape paintings. Note that in this listing there are two paperback volumes contained in a hard slipcase. One is titled, 'Peaks And Valleys', an autobiography.
