  • Mrs. Floate was an Australian, entirely self taught cook  who was well known for winning a total of 1284 prizes in competitive cooking, for example winning the G.J. Coles Cup at the Royal Melbourne Show regularly. Mrs. Floate also also acted as a judge in the cooking section of various shows.   • Tim Burstall is known as the celebrated director of Stork, Alvin Purple and other 'ocker' comedies. In the early 1950s Tim began to keep a diary, to record the world of the group of 'arties' and 'intellectuals' he was living among in Eltham, then a rural area outside Melbourne where cheap land was available.   • This is a 383 page hardback book with dustjacket published in 1985 by Brown Prior Anderson Pty Ltd, Burwood Victoria. It is in good condition throughout. The book provides a comprehensive history of the town of Heathcote and the surrounding Shire of McIvor. Major Mitchell led the first European exploration through the district in 1836. By 1852 the European population was nearing 400 and the indigenous population was estimated to be approximately 30. Gold was discovered in 1853 and the rush was on.   • When thousands of Chinese landed in South Australia it was a marathon walk, originally from Adelaide, then from Victor Harbour and finally from Robe. This was to avoid paying a capitation tax of ten pounds. The provisions of a Victorian Act of 1855 sought to dramatically limit Chinese immigration by restricting the number of crew and passengers on each ship bringing Chinese into Victoria.
