The photographs were taken by Augustus Baker Peirce for his employer Benjamin Pierce Batchelder. Gus Peirce was told to photograph 'all the places of interest' so there are photos of where the people of Bendigo worked, banked, shopped, recreated, worshipped, drank, were punished, healed or buried. • Taken from the inside front dustjacket is "The Grace Park Lawn Tennis Club has numbered among its members some of the all-time greats of Australian tennis - men such as Australasia's first Davis Cup captain Alf Dunlop, Harry Hopman, Frank Sedgman, Merve Rose, Paul McNamee and Pat Cash; women such as Lorna Gyton, Esna Boyd, Grand Slam winner Margaret Court and Kerry Reid. Grace Park members have won a total of 132 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles. But this history is not just concerned with the champions. Joseph Johnson has set the story of the club against a background of the growth and development of Australian tennis over the past 100 years. He investigates the historical factors which culminated in the golden age of Grace Park and Australian tennis in the 1950s and 1960s. The history is rich in anecdotal material, which the author relates to the social, cultural and economic life of Melbourne, and in particular that of the Hawthorn area.
