Grace Park members have won a total of 132 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles. But this history is not just concerned with the champions. Joseph Johnson has set the story of the club against a background of the growth and development of Australian tennis over the past 100 years. He investigates the historical factors which culminated in the golden age of Grace Park and Australian tennis in the 1950s and 1960s. The history is rich in anecdotal material, which the author relates to the social, cultural and economic life of Melbourne, and in particular that of the Hawthorn area. AMAZING GRACE is not only an invaluable contribution to the history of sport in this country, but also sheds light on the social and recreational habits of the Australian people.' The series of views included in this book was commissioned by the Sandhurst Town Council for this Exhibition. The photographs were taken by Augustus Baker Peirce for his employer Benjamin Pierce Batchelder. Gus Peirce was told to photograph 'all the places of interest' so there are photos of where the people of Bendigo worked, banked, shopped, recreated, worshipped, drank, were punished, healed or buried. It is a most attractive piece which would be a superb addition to a farmhouse or provincial kitchen or for farmgate sales.
