Joseph Jenkins arrived at Port Melbourne on 22 March 1869 and began a series of diaries which were to become a unique account of life in colonial Australia. He worked on farms in the Ballarat and Castlemaine areas, and later as a street worker for the Maldon council. This was the time of gold fever, the Kelly's and spreading unemployment among farm workers. William Evans was the grandson of Joseph Jenkins and lived on the farm in Wales where, as a three year old, he had played with his grandfather after his return from Australia. His grandfather's diaries had lain undisturbed in the attic of a Welsh farmhouse for more than seventy years before they were abridged and notated by William. If you are interested in history this book is a 'must have'.
