  • In 1861 the founding citizens of Bendigo saw the upcoming 1862 London International Exhibition as an opportunity to showcase Bendigo 'so that a proper idea may more readily be formed at home of the importance of this great mining portion of Victoria.' The series of views included in this book was commissioned by the Sandhurst Town Council for this Exhibition. The photographs were taken by Augustus Baker Peirce for his employer Benjamin Pierce Batchelder. Gus Peirce was told to photograph 'all the places of interest' so there are photos of where the people of Bendigo worked, banked, shopped, recreated, worshipped, drank, were punished, healed or buried.
