In 1861 the founding citizens of Bendigo saw the upcoming 1862 London International Exhibition as an opportunity to showcase Bendigo 'so that a proper idea may more readily be formed at home of the importance of this great mining portion of Victoria.' The series of views included in this book was commissioned by the Sandhurst Town Council for this Exhibition. The photographs were taken by Augustus Baker Peirce for his employer Benjamin Pierce Batchelder. Gus Peirce was told to photograph 'all the places of interest' so there are photos of where the people of Bendigo worked, banked, shopped, recreated, worshipped, drank, were punished, healed or buried. The author, Dorothy Owen, spent her childhood surrounded by the beautiful forested mountains of Warburton, Victoria. Her father Harry Matheson was a timber man, a steam engine driver of those pioneering bush days. Thomas Eyres was born in Ballarat in 1870 and found his way to the Western Australian goldfields in 1894. After travelling by steamer and train he and a mate walked the last 180 miles to Coolgardie.
