It is renowned as one of the definitive works which chronicle the early life of the city, the first forty years of Bendigo's establishment and growth. George Mackay also wrote the first four volumes of the Annals of Bendigo. He died in 1948. For this 213-page reprint a very comprehensive index has been added.   • In 1861 the founding citizens of Bendigo saw the upcoming 1862 London International Exhibition as an opportunity to showcase Bendigo 'so that a proper idea may more readily be formed at home of the importance of this great mining portion of Victoria.' The series of views included in this book was commissioned by the Sandhurst Town Council for this Exhibition. The photographs were taken by Augustus Baker Peirce for his employer Benjamin Pierce Batchelder. Gus Peirce was told to photograph 'all the places of interest' so there are photos of where the people of Bendigo worked, banked, shopped, recreated, worshipped, drank, were punished, healed or buried.   • Olegas Truchanas, a Lithuanian born Tasmanian was a master photographer and a champion of the Tasmanian wilderness. He was also a councillor of the Australian Conservation Foundation.
