This fourth edition was a revision of the 1980 revision to "take account of many changes in family living which have become apparent." It is a comprehensive book which covers the basics of good nutrition, kitchen management, meal planning and service, home preservation of foods as well as a range of recipes under various headings. Those who attended school in Victoria, Australia and are of a 'certain age' will remember this school reader as 'The Earliest Reader for the Little Ones.' I hope you remember it fondly. This booklet was printed in Melbourne by G.W. Green & Sons Pty. Ltd. At the time Laurel Kerosene was the most popular kerosene amongst Australian housewives. The Vacuum Oil Company was the first oil company to be established in Australia. The recipes and hints published in this booklet had appeared in the Vacuum Country Journal and all had been tested and tasted. The book is in pretty good condition for its age. In 1906 at Sorrell in Tasmania, Melbourne born Howard Vernon (singer and comedian) married an actress and singer, Lavinia Florence De Loitte (1881-1962). Vinia, as she was known on stage, was the toast of Sydney in 1904 as Fifi in The Belle of New York. This book gives an account by Vinia de Loitte (Mrs. Howard Vernon) of the stories of the operas and of their production and revivals in Australia. The printer is Whitmarks Ltd. of 102 Sussex Street Sydney. This book has been signed by Vinia and inscribed as " I take after my mother (Mikado)." On the top ACC is imprinted which shows it originated from a city council somewhere beginning with the letter A. The lamp inside is intact and originally would have been filled with kerosene. Wool way bills are documents that record the transportation of wool from one place to another. They contain information such as the quantity of wool, the destination, and the date of shipment. The business Goldsbrough, Mort & Company Limited was established in 1848 and its registered office was at 526 Bourke Street, Melbourne. The company dealt in wool, hides, sheepskins, tallow, furred skins etc. In 1962 Goldsbrough, Mort & Co merged with Elder Smith & Co to form Elder Smith Goldsbrough Mort & Co Ltd. The Australian Natives' Association (ANA) was a mutual society founded in Melbourne, Australia in April 1871. It was founded by and for the benefit of white native-born Australians and membership was restricted to that group. This small booklet has 106 pages. The knife shown in the photos gives a size comparison as the booklet measures 10 cms x 17 cms. This booklet dates to the late 1800s and is in great condition for its age. I imagine this may have been a student's atlas. It is covered in plastic which could be removed. On the rear of the book the retail sticker from Brown Study in Ringwood remains. My mother, funnily enough, bought many of our school books there and I remember once purchased the covering process in either brown paper or plastic and labelling would begin.
