This item dates at least to the 1960s, maybe even to the 1950s. It was printed by Mason Firth & McCutcheon Pty. Ltd. Melbourne. What fabulous colours they worked with then to decorate their homes. This book is possibly the first in Australia to present a collection of major sculptures by more than thirty monumental works by leading Australian sculptors in the landscape context of a productive working farm. Elgee Park, located at Merricks North on Victoria's Morning Peninsula, is renowned for its Quarter Horse Stud and the historic Elgee Park Winery. Over the past 25 years Baillieu Myer and his family have added yet another dimension to the property by assiduously collecting large-scale outdoor works by sculptors including Clement Meadmore, Ron Robertson-Swann, Robert Klippel, Inge King, Lenton Parr, Geoffrey Bartlett, Bruce Armstrong and David Wilson. Author, Ken Scarlett, has arranged the sculptures in the book according to where they are located on a series of separate walks around the farm. The sculptures, their landscape settings, daily activities and the beautiful gardens of Elgee Park are the subjects of Mark Chew's dramatic photographs taken over all four seasons of the year. Thomas Eyres was born in Ballarat in 1870 and found his way to the Western Australian goldfields in 1894. After travelling by steamer and train he and a mate walked the last 180 miles to Coolgardie. In 1906 at Sorrell in Tasmania, Melbourne born Howard Vernon (singer and comedian) married an actress and singer, Lavinia Florence De Loitte (1881-1962). Vinia, as she was known on stage, was the toast of Sydney in 1904 as Fifi in The Belle of New York. This book gives an account by Vinia de Loitte (Mrs. Howard Vernon) of the stories of the operas and of their production and revivals in Australia. The printer is Whitmarks Ltd. of 102 Sussex Street Sydney. This book has been signed by Vinia and inscribed as " I take after my mother (Mikado)." George Mackay's book 'History of Bendigo' was originally published in 1891. It is renowned as one of the definitive works which chronicle the early life of the city, the first forty years of Bendigo's establishment and growth. George Mackay also wrote the first four volumes of the Annals of Bendigo. He died in 1948. For this 213-page reprint a very comprehensive index has been added. The Vacuum Oil Company was the first oil company to be established in Australia. Lloyd Frederic Rees (1895-1988) was an Australian landscape painter who twice won the Wynne Prize for his landscape paintings.
